Short answer: book your Christmas hotel now, pick a rate with free cancellation, and check the price again before the cancellation deadline. Hotels in popular Christmas cities fill up early, and family rooms go first. Real last-minute discounts for December 24-26 are rare, so waiting usually costs you more, not less.
We know, we know. You were hoping someone would say “relax, prices drop in December.” Sadly, Santa doesn’t run the hotel industry. The good news: a little timing (and one sneaky trick) can save you a lot. Here’s how we do it.
When should you book a hotel for Christmas?
| When you book | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Late October to mid-November | The sweet spot. Lots of rooms to choose from, including family rooms and suites, and plenty of refundable rates. |
| Late November (around Black Friday) | Some booking sites run sales. Worth a peek if you already hold a refundable booking you can swap. |
| Early December | The popular city-center hotels start running out. Bigger rooms and good-value options are often gone. |
| The week before Christmas | Higher prices and slim pickings anywhere with Christmas markets or big holiday events. Last-minute deals do pop up in business cities that empty out over the holidays, but almost never for family rooms. |
The logic is simple. Hotels raise prices as their rooms fill up, and at Christmas, rooms fill up early. So the best time to book is usually the moment your dates are set.
The free-cancellation trick: lock in a price, then keep checking
You don’t have to choose between booking early and waiting for a better price. You can do both:
- Book a refundable rate now. Pick a room with free cancellation. The room is yours, and you’re not stuck with it.
- Write down the cancellation deadline. It’s often 24-72 hours before arrival, but some holiday rates lock in weeks earlier. Read the actual policy, not just the cheerful “free cancellation” badge.
- Check the price again in late November and early December. If the same room got cheaper (on the same site or a different one), book the cheaper one first, then cancel the original.
Two things to watch out for. A non-refundable rate can look tempting, but Christmas plans love to change: flights get canceled, kids get sick, Grandma changes the dinner plan. And free cancellation sometimes costs a little extra, so compare refundable rates with refundable rates.
This trick has worked for our own family, too. A week before a family Christmas trip to Strasbourg (yes, for the Christmas markets), our founder, Talia Klein Perez, took one last look at the bookings and realized how much the hotel was costing. She moved the first three nights to a Center Parcs for about a third of the price and booked an aparthotel for the other four. About an hour of searching saved the family close to €1,000. That’s a lot of mulled wine.
Booking Christmas hotels for families and groups
Families have it hardest over the holidays, because the rooms that fit everyone sell out first.
- Family rooms go fast. Hotels have way fewer quad rooms and family suites than doubles. If you need space for four or five, book earlier than a couple would.
- Count every guest, kids included. Enter the right number of adults and children, with ages, before you compare. A price for two adults isn’t the price for your family, and some sites only show the real rate once everyone is counted.
- Check the beds, not just the occupancy. “Sleeps 4” can mean one double bed and a sofa everyone fights over. Look at the bed list for every room on your shortlist.
- Compare the same room type. A “family room” on one site can be a double with a sofa bed on another. Check bed types and maximum occupancy.
- Two rooms or one big room? Two connecting rooms are sometimes cheaper than one suite, and sometimes not. Check both.
Heading to Asia? Talia has a trick for that. In parts of Asia, especially Thailand and Japan, kids often share their parents’ bed. Enter your children’s real ages and many hotels won’t give them a bed of their own, which is how a family of five ends up in a room with two twin beds. So she first searches for five adults, which only shows rooms with enough beds for everyone. Once she finds a room she likes, she switches the guests back to the real ages before booking and checks whether the price changes.
Why breakfast and meal plans matter more over the holidays
On December 24 and 25, lots of restaurants close or switch to pricey holiday set menus. A rate with breakfast, or half board, can save real money and a lot of hangry wandering, especially with kids. When you compare prices, compare the same meal plan. A cheaper room without breakfast isn’t a deal if you then buy breakfast for four every morning.
Where do Christmas hotels sell out fastest?
Demand peaks wherever Christmas is the main event:
- Christmas market cities like Vienna, Prague, Munich, Strasbourg, Cologne and Budapest. The markets usually run from late November until just before Christmas, and weekends are the busiest.
- New York City during the holidays, especially around Midtown and the big seasonal displays.
- London in December, with shows, markets and shopping.
- Snowy “real Christmas” spots like Lapland and the Alps. Rooms there often book up months ahead.
Business cities can go the other way. When the business travelers fly home for the holidays, some hotels drop their prices. If your destination is flexible, that’s where last-minute bargains hide.
Compare the final price, not the first price you see
The price on the search results page is often not what you pay. Taxes and fees get added at checkout, and every booking site handles them differently. Over Christmas, when every dollar counts, compare the final checkout price for the same room, dates, guests and conditions.
That’s exactly why we built Hotel Ninja. It’s a free Chrome extension for desktop. Open a hotel on Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, Agoda or another supported site, pick your dates and guests, and Hotel Ninja shows what the same room costs on the other sites, with taxes and fees included. Turn on the free cancellation or meal plan filter (breakfast, half board, full board or all-inclusive) on the booking site, and Hotel Ninja compares only the matching rates. You also see a review score based on verified reviews only. No sign-up, and you book on whichever site you like.
One honest note: the cheapest price doesn’t always come with the same conditions. Before you book, check the cancellation policy, the meal plan and the room details.
Christmas hotel booking checklist
- Book as soon as your dates are set, ideally before mid-November.
- Choose free cancellation and write down the deadline.
- Enter every guest, including kids and their ages.
- Compare the same room type, meal plan and cancellation terms.
- Compare final checkout prices across booking sites.
- Check the price again in late November and early December, and rebook if it drops.
Frequently asked questions
Do hotel prices go down closer to Christmas?
Rarely in popular holiday destinations. Hotels there usually fill up, so prices tend to rise as Christmas gets closer. Last-minute drops are more likely in business cities that empty out over the holidays.
How far in advance should I book a hotel for Christmas?
As early as you can once your dates are set. For popular cities, family rooms and snow destinations, aim for October or early November. Choose a refundable rate so you can still switch if you find a better price.
Is it cheaper to book Christmas hotels on Black Friday?
Sometimes. Some booking sites run late-November sales. If you already hold a refundable booking, compare the sale price with what you have and switch only if the new rate has the same conditions.
Should I book a refundable or non-refundable rate for Christmas?
For most people, refundable. Holiday plans change often, and a refundable rate lets you rebook if the price drops. Non-refundable only makes sense if your plans are certain and the savings are big.
Why does the hotel price change at checkout?
Many booking sites show a price before taxes and fees, then add them at checkout. Comparing the final checkout price across sites is the only way to know which one is really the cheapest.
